Facebook is preparing to come out with a new email service, where users can get email sent to an email address @facebook.com. There were a number of headlines that advertised this as "the Gmail killer", though it could just as easily be "the Hotmail killer" or "the Yahoo! Mail killer".
First, Facebook started to try to be your "one true login". They seem to be succeeding in this, because a number of sites have started to give you the option to sign in using Facebook instead of creating an account. For example, here are some random sites that came up when I Googled "Facebook Connect":

SurveyMonkey
TravelPod
Facebook even has taken so much of Myspace's market that they are introducing a "connect with Facebook" option. That's the ultimate admission on Myspace's part that Facebook has won the war.
Facebook has succeeded there, so they are looking to expand. The next horizon seems to be Facebook email, which they've announced plans to implement. Facebook's CEO says that this email will be even better because they know who your friends are. No, really.
"Because we know who your friends are," said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, "we can do some really good filtering for you."
There is something a little creepy about that, but I do think this idea will take off. The interesting part is this: back in the early 2000's, sites like AOL had email and chat services, and tried to expand in to profiles...same with Yahoo! and MSN. None of those transitions worked well. However, Facebook starting with profiles and expanding to chat and then email might actually work.
So, Facebook vs. Google...who wins? Time will tell.

Can you be arrested for exploiting yourself?
How can someone exploit themselves?
This is a question I asked myself when I read about the article linked below. In late March, a 14 year old girl decided to post some 30 "explicit" pictures of herself on her Myspace page. This is already a bad idea, but there is a twist. Since she is distributing what is legally child pornography, the girl is now subject to child pornography charges, and may have to register herself as a sex offender.
This is just another one of those cases of the laws being behind the technology. These laws were put in place before technology could change these things - typically, it was a lot harder to distribute these things, because you would need to actually produce the pictures, and how many kids know how to do that?
Now, it's just click and upload.

How to turn the tables on human resources
What you have on your Myspace or Facebook, someone can find easily.
Try this. Log out totally, search for your name. See what information you can see about yourself.
This information can be used in electronic warfare, as David Csuha discussed recently in his Security Sense blog, but also can be used in scenarios such as job hires, and often is! According to recent estimates, 20% of companies use social networking sites like Myspace or Facebook as part of the hiring process.
For example, put forth a cover letter saying how responsible you are, and a company may check up on you - Googling your full name in quotes may lead to pictures of you falling down drunk because someone tagged a picture with your full name on Facebook.
If you are job seeking and this is your Myspace picture, change it.
What happens if interviewers search Myspace - will they find a public blog you wrote saying "hey, I'm at work and it sucks here, but it's nice to be paid to hang out on Myspace instead of working"?
What sort of comments are your friends leaving you, and what do those things say about you?

Welcome David Paterson
Today, aside from being St. Patrick's Day, is a historical day.
David Paterson is being sworn in at 1 PM today to replace Eliot Spitzer as the governor of New York. Paterson is making history in a few ways. First of all, he is the first African-American governor in New York history, and secondly, he will be the second blind governor in US history.
Of course, there is the other side of it, the reason Spitzer resigned, which brought a lot of controversy in my classes when I brought it up. It turns out there were multiple women that he had, um, vacations with. One of the more recent ones has a MySpace page. It turns out she is a songwriter as well. It turns out her songs have been downloaded a lot (legally, too, believe it or not), and estimates that a lot of people have purchased her songs. Actual numbers have not yet been confirmed. Amazing, isn't it?
Z100 (a New York radio station) has been playing her song, because it apparently has been requested a lot.

Super Bowl Advertisements
First of all, please allow me to be a fan and say
HOW ABOUT THOSE GIANTS!
I am a fan of the team and was thrilled to see them win a great game last night.
Now that that's out of the way...one of the things the Super Bowl is known for, aside from football, is the advertisements. There have been a lot of famous ads in Super Bowl history, and advertisers usually pay a lot of money for the ads. This most of the time will mean they are well done and often funny.
If you'd like to take a look at the Super Bowl ads, the advertisers were smart enough to post them online this year for everyone to view. They've put them on Myspace:

Definitely worth checking out, even if you're not a football fan. I recommend the Bud Light "Breathe Fire" ad.

Myspace hoax leads to a suicide
People can be mean sometimes.
Apparently, some people created a fake myspace account and contacted a young woman, who was prone to depression. The young woman apparently befriended the person, who eventually told her she was a bad person, and this was enough for her to commit suicide.
It's amazing a) how cruel people can be and b) how easily people will throw their lives away in this country sometimes.
It's kind of bizarre, because there was an adult in on this hoax, doing this to the young woman.

Interesting Article: Celebs divorce taken public on MySpace
Yet another example of how the Internet is growing.
Travis Barker (of Blink 182) has filed for divorce from his wife, model Shanna Moakler. They both have blogged their sides of the story on their respective Myspace.com sites, taking the divorce to the public forum and basically embarassing no one except themselves.
